Chapter 10

Erin enjoyed the gentle hug Lance gave her, but no hug would paper over what had just happened. She’d let him know she wanted him, and he’d made excuses. Used her as an excuse. So what if he’d been gentle about it?

She let him hug her a little longer than she should have. When she was certain he believed she had accepted his reasoning, she pulled out of his arms.

“I need to go for a walk,” she announced. “Certainly it has to be safe for me to take a stroll.”

He remained kneeling beside her, and something in his expression suggested that she hadn’t fooled him. “Let me call the guys first. Let them know. I don’t want you mistaken for the UNSUB.”

Through a sniperscope they could see her clearly enough, and she imagined a group like that had other, even better options for seeing a thousand yards. But she couldn’t logically argue against giving them a heads-up.

“I’ll get my jacket.” And her pistol. She’d grown lax about wearing it indoors. That needed to stop.

She watched him rise and reach for the radio on the kitchen counter, then stood and headed down the hall herself, shaking out stiffness as she went.

She roiled inside, feeling conflicted in a way she seldom did. She mostly lived what she thought of as a “bright line” life. She knew where she was headed, she knew the rules she needed to follow and when she absolutely had to break them and pretty much everything seemed clear to her. She wasn’t used to internal debates about what she felt or what she was doing.

Maybe she’d been living too simplistically. Maybe she’d become a creature of her career. Maybe she’d buried most of her feelings in the logic of investigation. FBI, through and through.

Life was certainly easier without a lot of gray areas. When she’d been younger, she’d actually fallen in love and thought she could combine her career with a marriage. How ridiculous that had turned out to be. The question, she supposed now, was had she let herself go too far in the other direction, putting her career above everything?

She guessed she had. Little more than a month ago she’d almost died. Surely a little reevaluation was the least she should expect?

Mortality didn’t frighten her. Not now. When she’d finally become alert enough to realize that she’d been at death’s door, there had been a period when she had wished they had just let her die.

Not because she hurt so much, but because it would have been so easy to just let go. Instead, she had returned to life, with all its messiness, and a near obsession with finding a bomber that she couldn’t even act on because she wasn’t fit for duty.

Now she’d made her life even messier by giving in to a craving for a man who evidently didn’t want her. Not that she could blame him. Except for Tom, men had stopped expressing an interest in her a while ago. She made
